Work has begun on the replacement of Gem Bridge on Route 522 south between Big Cove Tannery and Needmore. The 80-yearold bridge that crosses Licking Creek will be replaced with a single span, pre-stressed concrete spread box beam bridge. During the construction, the new bridge will be built in half widths and traffic will be maintained with these temporary traffic signals. The single lane closure began on Tuesday, with the east lane of the bridge closed to northbound travelers. PennDOT announced previously that there will be no detour, but the signals may cause some delays in traffic. Lobar Site Development of Dillsburg, Pa., is the general contractor for the $2.1 million project that is expected to be completed in May 2011.
