Perry County Woman Takes First In Angel Food Cake Contest

Harrisburg, PA – Laura Fultz from Liverpool, Perry County took home first prize in the 2019 Incredible! Egg™ Angel Food Cake Contest on Sunday, January 6, at the 103rd Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg.

Contestants become eligible to compete at the PA Farm Show after winning the angel food cake contest at a county or community fair. Fultz represented the Perry County Community Fair.

The competition consisted of two separate rounds, with cakes judged on flavor (smell, taste, flavoring), inside characteristics (texture and lightness), overall appearance (surface, size, color), creativity, and topping, icing or decoration.

Monetary prizes are given to the top three winners in the order of $500, $250, and $100.

Five judges ranked 64 cakes at the 16th annual competition. The judging panel included Kelsey Schlegel, a food science student at Penn State and former winner of national FFA food science award; John Moeller, former White House chef for Clinton and Bush administrations; Abby Miles, longtime participant in show competitions; Ena Bieber, retired teacher who graduated from judging school; and Rick Kralj, registered dietitian and ServSafe instructor at Penn State University.

Second: Laura Henry of Elizabethville, Dauphin Co., representing Gratz Fair

Third: Steven Donough of Port Royal, Juniata Co., representing the Fulton County Fair

Fourth: Geraldine Kobak of Collegeville, Montgomery Co, Goshen Country Fair

Fifth: Jayne Wenger of Reinholds, Lancaster Co., Lebanon Area Fair

1st Place Recipe
Angel Food Cake
1 ½ cups egg whites PA
preferred (room temperature) 1 ½ cups sifted cake flour
1 ½ cups sifted powdered
sugar
1 ½ teaspoons cream of
tartar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup granulated sugar

Sift together powdered sugar and flour in a large bowl. Beat egg whites, cream of tartar and vanilla until soft peaks form, then gradually add granulated sugar. Add the powdered sugar mixture, gently folding in by fourths. Pour into ungreased 10-inch tube pan. Bake on lowest rack in 350 degree oven for 45 minutes.

Frosting:

1 cup Crisco
½ cup real butter, Land
O’ Lakes
2 lb. 10X sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 cup evaporated milk

Beat Crisco and butter together. Gradually add 10x sugar and evaporated milk and then beat for 5 minutes. Tint frosting and decorate cake as desired.
