The Forbes Road Cardinal field hockey team rallied to a 3-0 victory over the Huntingdon Bearcats to become the District 6A champions last Wednesday night at Bald Eagle Area High School.

In July, when the call came to Forbes Road assistant coach Mindy Horne that longtime coach Carol Cline had been life-flighted to Winchester Hospital, one could only imagine what went through her mind. As coach Cline continues her recovery, the Cardinals took the field in search of their 20th District 6 Championship. Like many other games this season, the Cardinals took to the field under wet, rainy conditions. Neither team would be deterred by the weather as portions of the game were played midfield with both teams vying for the upper hand. The Cardinals, however, were able to gain the edge by capitalizing on their time in the circle.

Sophomore Madison Hays tallied goal number one for the Cardinals on a free hit play set up by Hailey Dodson 13 minutes in. Dodson sent the ball to Quincy McMath, who then centered it into the circle to the awaiting stick of Hays on the left post. The remainder of the first-half time would tick off the clock, giving Forbes the 1-0 edge at the half.

The Cardinals would strike within the first four minutes of the second half, making good use, once again, of a free hit play going into the circle. Huntingdon goalie, Mikayla Cummings, was pulled out of her box just enough for Harlie Strait to quickly shove a pass, sent to her by Mara Broadwater, right into the cage.

After more back-and-forth play, the Cardinals were able to deny several Bearcat penalty corner attempts down the stretch to once again charge downfield and back into scoring position. Broadwater rebounded a loose ball off the goal pads to score the final goal and the championship for Forbes Road with a final score of 3 to 0

Forbes Road will enter the PIAA Class A tournament November 6.
