From Traditional Farms To Niche Farming, Agriculture Evolves

NICKTOWN, Pa. (AP) – Walking around his Blue Goose Farm one July afternoon, Scott Farabaugh described his day-to-day life as a farmer:

Planting crops with his hands, eating meals with his family, trying new growing techniques, watching his children learn from the land, figuring out ways to meet customers’ needs, dealing with economic issues, feeling the warmth of the sun and the pounding of the rain.

And that is a life Farabaugh lives every moment when he is on his property.

“I make the joke that the best part of my job is I wake up and I’m at work, and the worst part of my job is I wake up and I’m at work,’’ Farabaugh said. “Obviously, you can get good and bad in all of that. . It’s a lifestyle. It’s not 9 to 5 and you’re done.’’

Blue Goose Farm, located in Nicktown, is a community-supported agriculture initiative in which each member pays a flat fee at the beginning of the year and then receives a box of produce once a week throughout the growing season. The operation has expanded from 123 members in 2008 to more than 300.

Not ... an occupation

Farabaugh talks with pride about being involved in the entire process of growing food - from putting a seed into the soil and tending to a plant until a healthy, nutritious vegetable is placed in a box and shipped.

Similarly, Tommy Nagle Jr., the owner of a cattle farm in St. Augustine, near Patton in northern Cambria County, feels a “sense of accomplishment’’ when he sees a “calf being born, and watching how that calf grows up to slaughter weight.’’

Nagle, who started farming full time in 2010, referred to his chosen profession as a “lifestyle’’ and “not really an occupation.’’

Both face uncertainties as farmers, ranging from the weather to the impact of global trade issues on the industry, which the Cambria County Farm Bureau - with about 800 members, according to Nagle, the organization’s president – works to address by providing a way to access local, state and federal legislators.

Learn how to work

Farabaugh hopes his children develop an interest in keeping the land and farming.

But he does not plan to force the lifestyle on them.

“I want them to learn how to work, is what I want,’’ Farabaugh said. “If you know how to work, and can work with other people and work with your hands, you’ll never be broke. An employer, if he can find somebody who can work, he’ll find a spot for him and he’ll teach him what he wants them to know.

Fewer and fewer individuals are making careers out of farming – a trend that has been occurring for decades.

Blue Goose was one of Cambria County’s 551 farms in 2012, the year of the most recent federal Census of Agriculture. That census also listed 1,140 and 1,210 farms, respectively, in Somerset and Bedford counties. The farms in those three counties together covered about a half-million acres.

The three counties sold products with a market value of more than $250 million.

While the market value increased from the previous census in 2007, the number of farms decreased by 16 percent in Cambria County and one percent in Somerset, with Bedford seeing a three-percent increase.

Organizations, such as 4-H, work to develop children’s interest in agriculture through hands-on learning activities. But, in modern times, the education goes beyond traditional projects involving livestock and produce to include science and technology.

Stiles-Mikesell said those skills can then be used in many occupations, including farming, veterinary science and agro-business, where the children can grow up to make positive impacts.

“The biggest strength of 4-H is we help them build that network within their community,’’ Stiles-Mikesell said. “Then, with social media and things today, that network grows into what our pledge actually is. The pledge that the kids have is `our club, our community, our country and our world.’ We support that.’’

Grown in Pennsylvania

Nagle and Farabaugh are involved in what is considered traditional agriculture – livestock and produce.

But specialty businesses – including honey, maple syrup and wine – have been developing locally in recent years.

In 2017, John “T.J.’’ Jackson, a longtime Ligonier resident, moved to Pittsburgh and started Real Fungi LLC. The company supplies hand-picked wild mushrooms to about three dozen businesses in western Pennsylvania, including Myriam’s Table in Ligonier, Out of the Fire Cafe in Donegal, Westmoreland Country Club and Oakmont Country Club.

“I kinda saw the demand there for local wild mushrooms at the restaurant level and even at the grocery stores and retail level,’’ said Jackson, a licensed forager. “I just decided to go all in and see what I could do with it.


From tourism to retail sales, area businesses support and benefit from farming

Balance Restaurant’s summer menu includes a dish with locally sourced corn from Yarnick’s Farm grilled in the husk, flash fried and finished with mayonnaise, Mexican spices, Parmesan cheese, fresh-squeezed lime juice and green onions.

Somerset Tractor Co., located in Stoystown, sells and services hay equipment, tractors, skid steer loaders and other pieces of heavy machinery that are vital to the operators of many farms throughout the region.

And in Bedford County, the local chamber of commerce promotes the culture, tastes and sights of agriculture as a way to attract tourists to the county where less than 50,000 people live.

Those businesses might seem disparate.

But, together, they are part of an interconnected infrastructure of restaurants and breweries, athome cooks, slaughterhouses, equipment suppliers and shippers that all play roles in building up the local farming community.

“I support anybody that wants to participate in agrobusiness, in whatever facet that is,’’ said Will Paxton, co-owner and general manager of Somerset Tractor, which is connected to the internationally known brand New Holland Agriculture. “Whether you’re brewing beer or selling equipment, I think that how we interface with each other is very important to the success of our economy.’’

Buying, selling locally

Dealing with farmers on a daily basis provides Paxton with insight into the issues and concerns of individuals involved in agriculture. He described commodity based agriculture as “volatile for my customer base’’ and something that eventually affects his own business.

Paxton said his business has been able to grow over the past decade from a two-person operation with one phone line into a company that employs 15 workers, thanks to smart overhead decisions, promotions and listening to his customers - even in an agriculture sector that is “concentrating itself or contracting.’’

Like Paxton, Dallas Pursley, Balance’s executive chef, grew up on a small farm.

“Having those roots as my background makes me really understand the blood, sweat and tears and overall hard work it takes to actually operate a family farm, or a farm in general,’’ said Pursley, who said his family owned land in Missouri.

Steeped in an agriculture background, Pursley has created a menu at Balance that uses about 60 percent locally sourced perishable items, including meats from Black Valley Farm in Everett; fresh-picked wild mushrooms and 25 percent shelf-stable products.

“To be able to gather the story, as well as being able to understand how your food is being grown or produced, makes it a lot more fulfilling than just eating food,’’ Pursley said. “If everyone in life was able to conceptualize where and how their food is being produced and grown, you would think way more consciously about the dietary – as well as the nutritional – outcome of that.

Ag and tourism

Black Valley Farm is one of more than 1,000 operating in Bedford County.

Producers raise apples, wine grapes, bison, ducks and countless vegetables and livestock. With more than 90 percent of the county covered by cropland, pastureland or woodland, the bucolic setting is dotted with old barns, 14 covered bridges, fields of crops and trees.

The agricultural history stretches back to the early days of the nation, including when, in 1794, both insurgents and federal troops stayed - at different times - at what is now called the Jean Bonnet Tavern during the Whiskey Rebellion, an uprising by western Pennsylvania farmers in opposition to a whiskey tax.

The Bedford County Chamber of Commerce markets all of those aspects of farming, including history, while supporting events such as the Farm to Table Chef Showcase and Downtown on the Farm to lure tourists to the region. “I think we have one of the most robust agriculture promotion initiatives in the region,’’ said Kellie Goodman Shaffer, the chamber’s president and CEO.

The symbiotic relationship of agriculture, the county’s No. 1 business, and tourism, second on the list, brings together aspects of economics, history and culture.

“It’s extremely important, I think not just for the economic benefit, but because our county was really built on agriculture,’’ Shaffer said. “I think it is inherent in our culture, in our values.

“It’s hard to find people in Bedford County that aren’t somewhat related to agriculture, either through their family history or heritage. Many people are hobby farmers in addition to their primary jobs. But there are also many, many families that agriculture is their No. 1 job as well.’’
