Chauncey J. McGarvey Jr.

Chauncey J. “Chaunce” McGarvey Jr., 79, McConnellsburg, died at home Monday, August 6, 2018, surrounded by his loving wife of 40 years and children and grandchildren.

Having been born in Pittsburgh December 10, 1938, he moved to McConnellsburg when he was 8 years old with his parents, Chauncey J. Sr. and Anna Williams McGarvey, and a sister, Anna Marie. He never left after coming to love the town and county.

He established himself as quite the entrepreneur at an early age. He owned and operated several businesses in McConnellsburg: McGarvey’s Upholstery, Mac’s Recreation Center, Western Auto and McGarvey’s Floor Covering. He and his wife also owned several rental properties including the Country Corner Plaza.

Also active in his community, he served as charter president of the Jaycees, longtime member of Mc- Connellsburg Lions, NRA, former president of the Mason-Dixon Safari Club and past officer of McConnellsburg Fire Co.

An outdoor enthusiast, he loved to hunt, making many trips to the West and enjoyed watching NASCAR and other sports. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Paulette “Polly” McGarvey; three sons: Timothy “Tim” (wife Debora), McConnellsburg; Anthony “Tony” (wife Martina), Chambersburg; and Tobias “Toby” (wife Dena), McConnellsburg; two daughters: Tracey Truax (husband Edwin), Willow Hill; and Terri Blumenthal (husband Kevin Kelly), Carlisle; two stepsons: Rodney Peck (wife Becky), Harrisonville, and Kevin Peck (wife Amber), Greencastle; 19 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and an infant son, Chauncey J. Mc- Garvey III.

A larger-than-life personality, Chaunce will be terribly missed by his family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at McConnellsburg United Methodist Church Saturday, August 11. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., with the service at 11 a.m. Pastor Robin Baer will officiate. Interment is private and at the convenience of the family.
