PA Preferred Junior Baking Contest Cookies, Brownies, Bars Fair Winner

Kendyl Truax from Needmore, took home top honors in the PA Preferred Junior Baking Contest with her Best Brownies recipe which was held at the Fulton County Fair on July 30, 2018.

The 2018 Junior Baking Cookies-Brownies-Bars contest is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s PA Preferred program and coordinated by the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs. The Fulton County Fair’s PA Preferred Junior Baking Cookies-Brownies-Bars winner is now eligible to compete in the state finals in January at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg. The first place winner at the Farm Show will be awarded a cash grand prize of $ 500 for the winning recipe.

This was PA Preferred’s second year of sponsoring the Junior Baking Contest. The goal of the PA Preferred Baking Contest is to encourage young people across the Commonwealth to participate in Pennsylvania’s agricultural fairs by showcasing Pennsylvania grown and produced products in their contest entries.

The winning recipe from the Fulton County Fair’s PA Preferred Junior Baking Cookies-Brownies-Bars baking contest is:

Best Brownies
1 cup (2 sticks) butter or
margarine
2 cups sugar
2 tsp. vanilla extract
4 eggs
¾ cup Hershey’s Cocoa
or Hershey’s
Special Dark Cocoa

1 cup all-purpose flour
½ tsp. baking powder
¼ tsp. salt
1 cup chopped nuts (optional) Creamy Brownie Frosting (optional)

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 13x9x2 inch baking pan. Place butter in large microwave safe bowl. Microwave at Medium (50%) for 2 to 2½ minutes or until melted. Stir in sugar and vanilla. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well with spoon after each addition. Add cocoa; beat until well blended. Add flour, baking powder and salt; beat well. Add nuts, if desired. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until brownies begin to pull away from sides of pan. Cool completely in pan on wire rack. Prepare and frost brownie with Creamy Brownie Frosting, if desired. Cut into bars. Makes about 24 brownies.

Creamy Brownie Frosting
6 T butter or margarine,
softened
6 T Hershey’s Cocoa
2 T light corn syrup or
honey
1 tsp. vanilla extract
2 cups powdered sugar
2-to-4 Tmilk

Beat butter, cocoa, corn syrup and vanilla in small bowl until blended. Add powdered sugar and milk; beat to spreading consistency. Makes 1 2/3 cups frosting.
