Annual Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Fair Contest Winner

Did you see all those apple pies at the Fulton County Fair last week? Our own hometown bakers created those special pies for competition in the annual Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest.

This years Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest winner was Nancy Younker from Big Cove Tannery.

Gourmet Apple Pie

Pie Crust

4 cups flour
1 T sugar
dash of salt
1 1/3 cup lard
1 egg
1 T vinegar
ice water

Mix flour, sugar and salt together. Beat egg and add 1 T vinegar, add enough ice water to make one cup. Mix liquid into dry ingredients with fork until comes together. Wrap in plastic until ready.

5 lg. apples (I used gala
and golden delicious) sliced
¼ cup brown sugar
¼ cup flour
1/8 tsp. nutmeg
¼ tsp. cinnamon

Roll out pie crust and put into pie pan. Crimp the edges. Mix dry ingredients with apples. Place into pie plate layering the slices.

2nd crust

Roll out second crust, cut into squares with a pastry wheel. Mix squares with ¼ cups of flour, 3/8 cup of brown sugar, ½ tsp. cinnamon, ¼ tsp. nutmeg, ½ cup of chopped pecans, and ½ cup of butterscotch chips. Toss to coat dough. Layer squares over the apples with no particular order, making sure that you put some of the dry ingredients around and over the squares.

Bake at 375 degrees. Cover pie with foil and bake for about 40-45 minutes, remove foil and bake uncovered another 15 minutes. Check for tenderness of apples by sticking a knife into them. Bake until golden. Remove from oven and cool.

When apple pie is cool, mix together 2 cups of 10X confectioner sugar, sifted, 4 T of milk, 2 T melted butter and 1 tsp. almond flavoring. Mix until smooth and thick. You may have to add more milk or sugar. Pour over top of pie.

More than 100 fairs across the state are offering cash prizes as part of the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest. The Fulton County Fair’s contest is a preliminary competition that leads to the selection of the final Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest winner to be held each January at the Pennsylvania State Farm Show. This years contest was sponsored by The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs.
