John P. Carroll

McConnellsburg, 71

John P. Carroll, 71 , Mc- Connellsburg, died Friday, July 6, 2018, in McConnellsburg, at his cabin from natural causes.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Elizabeth MacCaulty (Smith), December 1980. His mother was his best friend.

In his earlier life he was an accomplished musician. After serving four years in he United States First Army Band that resulted in an honorable discharge, he pursued other interests. He was a woodworker, building a log cabin by hand as well as high-end trim carpentry work. He loved the outdoors; hunting, fishing, and canoeing. In the years that followed he would help families whose children did not have a father and was a generous giver in a remarkable way. His strength in life was his sense of humor.

Born June 16, 1947, in Durham, N.C., he lived with his grandmother, Betty Smith, author of “A Tree Grows In Brooklyn.” She said, “It is a great feeling to have a newborn baby in the house.” His love for fishing was born from her love for the rod and reel.

He is survived by two sisters: Candace Carroll, St. Augustine, Fla., and Bonnie Mary MacCaulty (Carroll), Statesville, N.C.; an aunt and uncle: Nancy and Dag Pfeiffer, Wallingford, Conn., and three cousins: Liz Aviano (Pfeiffer), Berlin, Conn., as well as Eric and John Pfeiffer, Mancos, Colo.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted by Midway United Methodist Church, c/o Patricia Sharpe, 286 Liberty Hill Rd, Statesville, NC 28625.

To sum up his life, he would say, “I am who I am and that is all that I am.”
