Cowans Gap Stages Art And Music

By Cassidy Pittman STAFF WRITER

Every second Saturday of June, July, and August the Friends of Cowans Gap has a free concert at the park for the community. This month’s musical performance was by local favorite Chris Woodward & Shindiggin’, who rocked the crowd from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This is the third year Friends of Cowans Gap has hosted the free summer concerts thanks to its local sponsors. As an organization it hopes to inspire people to spend time outdoors and enjoy nature while experiencing live music. Mountain Ridge is scheduled to perform at next month’s concert.

Friends of Cowans Gap, a nonprofit organization, has also purchased a golf cart and playground equipment for the park, as well as a woodshed and an equipment shed. It also organizes such events as a spring 5K, Harvest Day in the fall, and a brand-new event called Art in the Park, which held its first class on June 24.

Art in the Park features an opportunity to create a landscape of the park with the help of former DCNR graphic designer Nancy Mendes. Registration for the next class, scheduled August 24, can be found at events.dcnr.pa.gov or call the park office at 717-485-3948.

According to their Web site, “The Friends of Cowans Gap State Park exists to preserve, protect and enhance the environment, history, educational and recreational programs of the park and surrounding areas through public programs, special events and volunteerism for the past, present and future generations.”
