Buelah J. Gipe

Chambersburg, 93

Buelah Jane (Barton) Gipe, 93, Chambersburg, died Sunday, June 17, 2018, in Chambersburg.

She was born in Crystal Spring, February 11, 1925, the daughter of the late H. Bruce and Edith H. (Mellott) Barton. She first married Paul Anthony Scalia Sr. and after his death married Harold Gipe.

She graduated from Warfordsburg High School in Fulton County, and soon went to work at Wilson College’s Penn Hall in Chambersburg. After the death of Tony Scalia, she worked at the Heinz processing plant, picked strawberries, took in ironing and other odd jobs to support her children. Later she was employed as a cook at South Hamilton Elementary School until her retirement.

Surviving are her daughter, Beth Anne Ehlert and two great-grandchildren: William H. Ehlert and Mara J. Ehlert and a sister, Shirley E. Remsburg.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by both husbands; children: Sheryl Anne Scalia McCurdy and Paul Anthony Scalia Jr.; a grandson, Sean McCurdy; two sisters: Hazel B. Brambley and M. Leone Remsburg; and a brother, Bernard C. Barton.

She was usually in motion and always found something to keep herself busy. She had a deep pride and love for her family. Her sharp wit and humor were appreciated by her extended family. She kept extensive albums of family pictures, her collection of Zane Grey books, swans, cardinals, angels and momentos from her children and grandchildren. Although she loved flowers and plants outside, she didn’t want houseplants, saying they wouldn’t live!

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 29, at William F. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, with Rev. Vernon Isner officiating. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital at www.stjude.org/donate.
