Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, February 14, and continues for 40 days (excluding Sundays) until Easter.

The word Lent can also mean “lengthen” which refers to the lengthening of days in the spring. Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time for self-examination and reflection . Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or volunteering and giving of themselves for others. The 40 days commemorate the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan, before he began his public ministry. Sundays in Lent are not counted in the 40 days because each Sunday represents a “mini-Easter” celebration of Jesus’ victory over sin and death.
