County Fair Opens Sunday

Features livestock competitions, truck dirt drags, demo derby, rides, and lots more

Celebrating its 97th year, the Fulton County Fair kicks off this Sunday, Aug. 13, and promises lots of things to see and do during its weeklong run.

The fair is held at the fairgrounds, 888 Lincoln Way East in McConnellsburg, and carries on through Saturday, Aug. 19, when its gates will close for this year.

Opening day on Sunday begins early, at 8:30 a.m., with an open horse show and continues later in the day, at 6:30 p.m., with a vesper service sponsored by the McConnellsburg Ministerium. The Fulton County Fair Queen Pageant, the evening’s feature event, follows at 8 p.m. The annual pageant is sponsored by Xi Eta Lambda Sorority. Admission to the fairground is free on opening day.

Monday, Aug. 14, is Armed Forces Day and all veterans and active military get 50 percent off the regular gate admission. Monday evening highlights include the Fulton County Youth Market Steer Show and a 4-wheeler rodeo, both at 6 p.m., and a baked goods sale at 9:30 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m.

Gates open at noon for a day full of fair activities on Tuesday, Aug. 15 – Family Day – beginning at 1 p.m. with a pedal tractor pull and pine box derby races at 3 p.m. The popular Little Miss Fair Queen Contest, sponsored by BB&T Bank, takes the stage at 6 p.m. Also at 6 is the Fulton County Youth Market Swine Show. At 7 p.m. truck pull excitement takes off with the diesel 4X4 pickup and semi-truck pull. The McConnellsburg Volunteer Fire Co.’s bike giveaway at 8:30 p.m. caps Tuesday’s events. Rides start at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

Demolition derby time is the high point of Buchanan Auto Park Day on Wednesday, Aug. 16, when the destruction of compact and full-size cars takes place. The fun gets going at 7 p.m. Also scheduled is the Fulton County Youth Market Sheep Show at 6 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m.

Sponsored by multiple local organizations, businesses and individuals, Senior Citizens Day takes place Thursday, Aug. 17, and all folks 65 and older will be admitted to the fair free until 5 p.m. Thursday night features include the farm stock tractors (gas and diesel) and gas 4X4 pickup pulls, Fulton County Youth Market Goat Show and bingo, all beginning at 7 p.m. Bingo is also scheduled for Friday and Saturday evenings at 7.

The Phantom Fireworks Day schedule on Friday, Aug. 15, features ATV dirt drag races at 5 p.m. and the Youth Barnyard Olympics and Youth Supreme Showmanship competition at 6 p.m. A spectacular fireworks show sponsored by Phantom Fireworks wraps up the day at 9:30 p.m. Gates open at 1 p.m.

The fair ends on Saturday, Aug. 19 – JLG Industries Day – with its premier event – the Fulton County Youth Livestock Sale, which gets under way at 6 p.m. Also on Saturday’s schedule are truck dirt drags at 6:30 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m.

Events scheduled more than once during fair week besides bingo are youth and adult air rifle and pistol shooting competitions at 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively, Monday through Saturday; and a flat-screen TV giveaway at 10 p.m. each night Monday through Saturday (must be present to win).

This year’s midway by Penn Valley Shows LLC of Middleburg,

Pa., will offer a variety of rides and games and, of course, there will be lots of favorite fair food items offered by local organizations and vendors to enjoy all week long.

Admission for children 12 and under is $6, which includes rides. Individuals over 12 pay $6 for admission and $9 for admission with rides. Children under 2 get in free, but rides are not included.
