Three Make All-State Teams

Three Fulton County high school basketball players were named to 2016-17 Pennsylvania Sports Writers All-State teams as Second Team picks last week.

McConnellsburg High School’s Bronwyne Mellott earned a Second Team place in Class 2A, and Southern Fulton’s Dylan Gordon and Olivia Mottern made the Second Teams in Class 1A.

Bronwyne Mellott is the area’s second all-time leading scorer and broke McConnellsburg’s all-time scoring record of 2,281 that has stood since 1991 in her final year of play. She led the Lady Spartans to their first District 5 championship title since 1991, averaging 26.3 points per game. No newcomer to statewide recognition, Mellott has been named to All-State teams for four consecutive years.

Southern Fulton senior Olivia Mottern also broke her school’s all-time scoring record of 1,637 points this season on the Lady Indians’ run to the PIAA 1A Sweet 16. Mottern averaged 17.9 points per game, and this is her first All-State honor.

Senior Dylan Gordon broke the boys all-time scoring record at Southern Fulton, racking up 1,649 points during his career. He ranks fifth in Franklin-Fulton points scored records. Gordon sank 54 percent of his shots from the field this season, averaging 20 points and 9 rebounds per game, to lead the Indians to the PIAA playoffs. Last year he was named to the All-State Third Team.
