A. LaVerne Barney, 89, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Saturday, April 16, 2016, at son Randy’s home while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.

Born September 23, 1926, in Hancock, Md., she was the daughter of Edgar and Mary Shives.

She was a member of Berkeley Springs Church of the Nazarene. She attended public schools in Hancock and had worked seasonally at Kesecker’s Canning Factory. She had worked at Berringer’s Nursing Home in Hancock, at Vanguard Products and was a co-owner of Amos’ New and Used Furniture, both in Berkeley Springs.

She was a member of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics Council #117 and the Ladies Auxiliary of Morgan County Rescue Service, both in Berkeley Springs. She enjoyed quilting, flower gardening, yard sales, flea markets and auctions.

She is survived by her children: Larry Gilbert Barney, Pamela Jean Shanholtz and Rusty Jay Barney, all of Berkeley Springs; and Randy Allen Barney, Green Spring, W.Va.; one sister, Orpha Lancaster of Cumberland, Md.; and one brother, Marshall N. Younker, Berkeley Springs; 10 grandchildren: Janelle R. Collins and Hayden R. Barney, both of Great Cacapon, W.Va.; Gidget “Nicky” Edwards, Angelic S. Bearup, Misty Keefer, Larry “Jay” Barney Jr., Wendy C. Schur and Moria L. Fox, all of Berkeley Springs; James A. Barney, Levels, W.Va., and Danielle M. Simms of Pensacola, Fla.; 22 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Roscoe “Buddy” Barney, on October 24, 2010; and one daughter, Janet LaVerne Bearup, on December 29, 2005.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 21, at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Berkeley Springs. Pastor Rodney C. Truax officiated. Interment was at Damascus Church Cemetery.
