Applications have already begun circulating throughout the community in anticipation of the fifth annual Szwydek Memorial 5K run/walk.

Co-organizers from the Central Fulton, Forbes Road and Southern Fulton school districts have begun spreading the word on the race scheduled for April 19 to honor fallen Marine Lance Cpl. Steven Szwydek of Warfordsburg. To be held this year at Forbes Road Junior/Senior High School, the race will again kick off at 9 a.m.

The event, in spite of less-thanfavorable weather conditions some years, has continued to draw a large crowd of enthusiastic participants who not only rally to remember the late Szwydek but to help raise money to send area high students to Arlington National Cemetery.

This year’s relatively flat race route will start in the front of the school and then send runners and walkers southbound on North Hess Road to a turnaround at Blacks Mountain Road.

Interested participants may register on-site on April 19 beginning at 7:45 a.m. for a fee of $20. Preregistration is also accepted between now and March 25 for a slightly lower fee of $15.

Registration forms may be obtained by contacting Nancy Szwydek at 717-294-6774 or at any of the three county high schools. In addition, forms can be obtained through the Forbes Road School District Web site at http://frsd.k12.pa.us. Forms and registration fees can be sent directly to Semper Fi Memorial 5K Run/Walk at 276 Mays Chapel Road, Warfordsburg, PA 17267.

Patriotic race day T-shirts are also available through the preregistration process and may be available for purchase the day of the race on a first-come, firstserved basis. Local businesses and residents interested in serving as race-day sponsors will have their names placed on the back of the race-day T-shirts. Sponsorships range in price.

“By sponsoring this event, you will not only be helping send junior and senior high school students to Arlington National Cemetery to honor and get an appreciation for the sacrifices of our U.S. military personnel, but you will be advertising your business in the most patriotic way,” said organizers.

In addition to taking home a patriotic race-day shirt, some lucky racers will also take home the gold, so to speak. Medals will be bestowed on the top-two runners in each of the following categories: 18 and under; 19 to 29; 30 to 39; 40 to 49; and 50 and over. Medals will also be presented to the oldest and youngest participants.

The Semper Fi Memorial was established in 2006 following the death of Warfordsburg resident Steven Szwydek, who was fatally wounded by an improvised explosive device while on his second tour of duty in Iraq.

Anyone needing more information regarding the fourth annual Szwydek Memorial 5K run/walk can contact Nancy Szwydek or any of the event co-organizers, Melissa Barton and Angie Booth at Southern Fulton High School; Mac Miller at Central Fulton; and Jeremy Hollinshead from Forbes Road.
