Free Tax Preparation Available
The Chambersburg Tax Aide Program and the AARP Foundation will offer free tax preparation in Chambersburg and McConnellsburg to lowto moderate-income families beginning February 3.
Help filing 2013 tax returns will be available to those who meet criteria set forth by AARP.
Tax returns will be done on a first-come, first-served basis at sites listed below. Those who are physically unable to go to a site may call 263-5479 and request a visit by two counselors.
The program also helps those in area nursing and assisted living centers, senior centers and community centers.
All clients are required to bring photo identification and a copy of their 2012 tax return. Those filing a 2013 return should bring all W-2’s, Social Security statements, 1099 forms for interest, dividends, pensions and annuities, brokers statements, dependent childcare provider information , unemployment benefit statements and other proof of income.
Property owners and renters filing for the Pennsylvania Property Tax/Rent Rebate must have their property tax bills that are marked paid by their tax collector and/or a copy of the rent receipt ( form PA- 1000RC) signed by their landlord. Clients filing for just the rebate should wait until late March or early April to file for the rebate because the state does not start mailing rebate checks until July.
Volunteers who work in the TaxAide program are required to attend classes, pass a test and be certified before they can prepare tax returns. All tax returns are prepared on a computer, reviewed by a second person and electronically filed. If a client wants to file a paper tax return that can also be provided.
E-filing is provided by Century Link. Use of the facilities is provided by Chambersburg Recreation Department, American Legion Post 46 and Farmers and Merchants Trust Co.
