Lancaster Co. Woman Wins Farm Show Apple Pie Contest

Second- time winner Dorothy Martin, Conestoga, Lancaster County won the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest on Saturday Jan. 4, at the 98th Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg.

Martin created a caramel apple pie with an intricate leaf crust. Martin was unable to attend the award presentation, but her daughter Debra Martin Berkoski proudly displayed the state’s best apple pie.

Five judges tasted 70 apple pies to pick Pennsylvania’s best. Judges included: Susan Pfeffer, graduate of Pennsylvania State Fair Judging School, Shelia Miller, former pie judge, chef Tom Schilling, executive chef at the Blair County Convention Center, Ena Bieber, home economics teacher, and Ed Weaver, owner of Weaver’s Orchard. Kevin Bieber served as emcee.

All pies presented won at local county fairs. Many of the contestants were entering for the first time.

Fifth – Melissa Gro, Bloomsburg Fair, Columbia Co. Caramel Apple Pie Recipe:

Pie Crust

½ cup vegetable shortening

¼ cup butter

¼ teaspoon salt

2½ cups flour

1/3 cup ice water

Cut shortening into flour, add butter and salt. Add water a little at a time. Work with hands to form dough. Roll onto flour covered cloth. Roll onto pie pan.

3½ cups PA Preferred ™ apples, peeled, cored, sliced

¾ cup sugar

3 tablespoons flour

½ teaspoon cinnamon

¼ teaspoon salt

25 Kraft caramels melted

Dash of nutmeg

Mix sugar, flour, salt, and spice together in a small bowl. Toss apples into the bowl. Lay apples into unbaked pie pan with dough in it. Top with the melted caramels. Top the whole pie with crust.
