HS Sports Standout Fatally Shot In Western Pa.
UNIONTOWN, Pa. (AP) – Authorities say a standout high school athlete trying to overcome a rocky family life was fatally shot Thursday inside a Uniontown home.
Officials say 17-year-old Darrell Ross began living with a grandfather in Connellsville after his mother died two years ago. His father had been in prison.
He became a talented wide receiver, scoring three touchdowns this year, and a lefthanded pitcher at Connellsville High School, drawing interest from college scouts.
Football coach David Mc- Donald says Ross also became part of his family.
But 20-year-old Hasani Simpkins is now charged with fatally shooting Ross Thursday with a stolen gun. Police say Simpkins may have been playing with the weapon when it fired.
Simpkins is being held without bail. He is being represented by a public defender whose phone rang unanswered Saturday.
