One Hurt When Gun Discharges At Philadelphia Train Station

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Authorities in Philadelphia say a gun accidentally discharged on a subway platform, injuring a passenger waiting for the train.

Police say the gun went off Friday as a man rummaged in his bag at the Market Frankford line’s 40th Street station. The bullet hit a metal bench, sending shrapnel toward a woman sitting nearby.

Transit agency spokeswoman Jerri Williams says the woman suffered a cut on her cheek and a welt on her arm. Twenty-one-year-old Shirley Williams tells WPVITV she didn’t initially realize she’d been struck by bullet fragments.

Police say the man appeared unaware of the mishap and boarded the next train. They say he called police after seeing news reports about the incident.
