Friends Of Meadow Grounds Lake Meet

Members of Friends of the Meadow Grounds Lake heard updates regarding ongoing efforts to restore water to the popular 204-acre lake at the group’s monthly meeting October 28.

Scott Alexander, Fulton County Conservation District watershed specialist, told the group that work on the geotechnical study of the lake’s dam is in progress. According to Friends member Kim Tweedy, Jerry Woomer of the state Fish and Boat Commission said the work had been awarded to URS of Philadelphia at a cost of $62,000, somewhat less than had been anticipated. She said she was promised an updated and complete report in January that will be shared with the public on the Friends Web site and in local news sources.

Alexander also reported that the state House of Representatives has the necessary votes to pass the transportation bill, which contains some of the necesarry funding for repair to the dam, however, there is an ongoing fight about raising the prevailing wage threshold for Pennsylvania public works projects.

A decision was made to mail the 2,000-plus postcards the Friends got signed over the Fall Folk Festival weekend to state representatives in small quantities over the next few months to show continued interest in moving toward restoring the lake.

There are to be more postcards and letters available for the public to sign in support of the lake’s restoration for future mailings at Tickle Your Fancy Gifts and Tea on Lincoln Way West in McConnellsburg.

The sale of T-shirts that can be purchased at the gift and tea shop help with the Friends fundraising efforts. Fourteen shirts were sold during the Fall Folk Festival, and the Christmas ornament that was created to help with fundraising completely sold out.

The Friends nonprofit status application, which was overseen by attorney Philip Harper, has been mailed and work continues on the group’s Web site and e-mail list for better communication with the public.

The public is encouraged to attend the Friends’ monthly meetings, which are held at 6 p.m. the fourth Monday of every month, excluding December, at Community State Bank, 415 Fulton Drive, McConnellsburg.
