The 2013 World of Outlaws season is in the books after this past weekend’s events at the Dirt Track at Charlotte as Josh Richards and Daryn Pittman were the 2013 World of Outlaws series champions.
Richards’ third career title came in his first full season back on tour after a brief stint in NASCAR, while Pittman’s is his first-ever WoO Sprint title, and it came in his first season driving for NASCAR’s Kasey Kahne.
Darrell Lanigan, the 2012 WoO LM champion, won his first career event at Charlotte on Friday night over Scott Bloomquist, Richards, Don O’Neal and Rick Eckert. Local racers to make the field Friday were Kenny Moreland (17th) and Chad Hollenbeck (22nd).
Richards came back to win the Saturday night finale, his 10th win of the year and 49th career WoO win. He defeated Eckert, Bobby Pierce, John Blankenship and local racer Dan Stone. Other locals in the show were Moreland (15th), Gregg Satterlee (16th) and Jeremy Miller (27th).
Over on the Sprint car side of things, Donny Schatz was the Friday night winner, which was his 23rd win on the tour this season. Schatz won a third of the Outlaw races this season but still fell 14 points short in the final point finish to Pittman, basically because Pittman outscored Schatz by more than 100 points in time trials.
Schatz’s win came over Brian Brown, Joey Saldana, Shane Stewart and Jason Sides. Local drivers Adam Wilt (20th) and Ryan Smith (25th) also made the show.
Paul McMahan scored his fourth win of the year in Saturday’s finale in the PAbased CJB Motorsports sprinter, winning over Sides, Schatz, Kraig Kinser and Steve Kinser. Hanover’s Logan Schuchart had the best finish by a local in eighth with Brent Marks 13th and Ryan Smith 24th.
The local Pennsylvania racing season will come to an end this Saturday with the $10,000-to-win Final Showdown for 410 Sprints at Susquehanna Speedway.
