James E. Ward Sr. Hancock, 82
James Edward Ward Sr., 82, Hancock, Md., died Thursday, November 7, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born September 14, 1931, at his home in Hancock, Md., he was the son of the late Raymond Earl and Mary Alice Weaver Ward.
He was a member of Hancock United Methodist Church and as one of the oldest living members was recently named a 72- year Saint. He was also very active with Camp Joy.
He was a 1951 graduate of Hancock High School.
He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was a member of Webster B. Harrison American Legion Post #26 in Hancock. He operated the Berkeley Springs Tastee Freeze (located at the site of the current Sheetz Store) from 1972-1975 and then operated Ward’s Restaurant from 1975-1978 (located at what is now Helsley- Johnson’s parking lot). He was a carpenter, working as general superintendent with AOKI Construction in Rockville, Md., retiring in 1996. From 1996-2000, he worked with the Department of Natural Resources at the Sideling Hill Overlook Center and then worked as a funeral assistant at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home from 2000- 2006. He enjoyed bowling and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, whom he married on August 15, 1953, Mary Lee Jackson Ward, at home; four children: James Edward Ward Jr. and his wife, Starla, of Hagerstown; Yvonne Lee Ward-Greene and Beverly Ann Snaman and her husband, Roger, all of Harpers Ferry, W. Va.; and Mary Jacqueline Flowers and her husband, Danny, of Warfordsburg; seven grandchildren: Benjamin Victor Ray of Hancock; Jason Earl Ward of Knoxville, Tenn.; Keith Webster Ward of Hagerstown; James Adam Flowers of Needmore; Daniel Brock Flowers of Indiana, Pa.; Ethan Edward Greene of Germantown, Md., and Emily Elizabeth Greene of Burkittsville, Md.; three great grandchildren: Dakota James Ray of Hancock; Lilly Jade Kline of Berkeley Springs; and Hailey Rose Flowers of Needmore; and his beloved Yorkie “Gracie.”
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m., Wednesday, November 13, 2013, at Hancock United Methodist Church. Rev. Duane Jensen and Rev. Michael Bynum officiated. Interment was at Tonoloway Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
