Touted by her personal coach Bill Wissinger as having a great serve and a powerful forearm, Mc- Connellsburg freshman Bronwyne Mellott definitely took her A game to the PIAA Class AA girls tennis championships Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, November 1, Mellott opened up the first-round of play with a sizeable win over District 3 champion Eleanor Gerhard of Camp Hill. Mellott got off to a rough start, dropping the opening set by the score of 6-2 to Gerhard.

Determined, she poured on the heat in the following two sets for 6-1 and 6-1 victories at Hershey Racquet Club.

Sidney Miggantz of Sewickley Academy saw much the same against Mellott Friday during the quarterfinal round. Mellott easily handled Miggantz by the score of 6-3 and 6-3 and followed up Saturday with a semifinal round victory against fellow left-handed player, Tyra Ott of Wilson Area.

In the championship round against Wyoming Seminary’s Nathalie Joanlanne, the two competitors battled it out for more than two hours. Joanlanne came out on top by the score of 6-4 and 6-6 (7-4) leaving Mellott with a well-deserved silver medal.

Mellott hopes to return to the state championships in 2014, having learned from her mistakes and continuing to improve developing her vast physical and mental capabilities.
