The Forbes Road School District’s Board of Directors held a special meeting on Tuesday, October 29, and, following an hour-long executive session, hired Maria Scott to fill its K-12 principal position. Scott replaces Christina Ramsey, who left the position in early September for a principal’s position in the Everett School District.

The motion to appoint Scott carried on a roll-call vote following several comments from the public during the public comment portion of the meeting. The vote was 6-2 with two board members voting “no” and one other member absent

Scott’s starting salary was set at $65,000, and she is scheduled to begin work in mid-November. According to school officials, 10 applications were received for the position and a total of four applicants were interviewed.

Scott, a Bedford County native, currently resides in Bedford and has been employed by the Bedford County School District for the past seven years as an English teacher. She was also an adjunct professor at Allegany College of Maryland. Prior to working at Bedford, she taught English at Chestnut Ridge for three years.

Prior to entering the teaching profession, Scott spent 14 years in the private sector as a public relations manager organizing corporate events. She has a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree from California University of Pennsylvania in English with a focus on administration.

Although her job at Forbes Road will be her first as a principal, she is undaunted by the prospect, saying that her education and her time in the private sector have prepared her for the position.

Although she intends to live in Bedford, she said that she “looks forward to being very active in the Forbes Road and Fulton County community.” She has a 17-year-old son, Connor, and a 6-year-old golden doodle named “Hobbes.”
