SF Senior Alumni Reunion Held

Southern Fulton Senior Alumni held its annual reunion at Whips Cove social hall on October 6, 2013. The doors opened at 11:30 a.m. for registration and socializing. The time was spent getting name tags and visiting with classmates and friends.

At 12:45 p.m., the call to order was given by President Helen Layton. The invocation was given by Melvin Mann, followed by the Pledge of Allegience.

Dinner was served buffet style. The menu consisted of roast beef, roast turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, lima beans, coleslaw, home baked rolls, iced tea, coffee and an assortment of homemade pies.

After dinner the introduction of classes 1936 through 1963 was read by Helen Layton. The following classes had members present: 1938 (1); 1941 (2); 1942 (2); 1943 (1); 1945 (4); 1947 (1); 1948 (1); 1949 (1); 1950 (4); 1952 (5); 1953 (7); 1955 (1); 1956 (6); 1957 (5); 1958 (3); 1959 (1); 1960 (4); 1962 (2) and 1963 (4). The new class of 1963 had four members present: Richard Layton, Janice Bernhard Layton, Marjorie Smith McGuire and David Horst. There was a total of 63 graduates for the class of 1963. Six members have passed.

Recognition was given to the Smith family with all five family members present: Alta smith Stahle (1942); William R. Smith (1945); Agnes Smith Mills (1948); Geraldine Smith Shaffer (1957); and E. Leon Smith (1962). Also to the McKee family with four family members present: William C. McKee (1955); Verla McKee Hill (1956); Maye McKee Schooley (1956); and Frank McKee (1959).

A short business meeting followed. Minutes were read from the reunion held last year on October 6 by the secretary, Doris Stahle. Necrology report and scholarship reports were read by Helen Layton. Treasurer’s report was given by Verla Hill.

A donation by the class of 1963 in the amount of $200 was given to the scholarship fund. There have been other donations made during the year to the scholarship fund. Some of these donations were given when an alumni made a reservation to come to the reunion and others were sent as a memorial or in honor of a classmate. Donations are always welcome to the scholarship fund. A mailing fund drive is not done because the postage and materials would cost more than the amount of donations sent back.

Two scholarships of $500 are given every year to two graduating seniors who are going on for further education. The question was raised if the amount of $500 could be increased to a higher amount. This question will be discussed at the next scholarship meeting.

Approval was given for a reunion to be held October 4 at Whips Cove social hall, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Invitations are sent out in August allowing about five weeks notice. Reservations must be received at least two weeks before the date of October 4, 2014.

The Southern Fulton Senior Alumni annual reunion has been held since 1990. Each year a new class comes on board. The association welcomes the class of 1964 next year. Everyone has a good time seeing old friends and enjoying a delicious meal.
