Robert E. Howell Mercersburg, 72
Born August 21, 1941, at Mc- Connellsburg, he was a son of Grace Fox Howell of Harrisonville and the late Hartford H. Howell.
After schooling he began working full time at a local farm and service station. In 1963 he became a member of the Washington D.C. Area Carpenter’s Union #1665 where he did carpentry work for 38 years. In 1974 he joined Elmer Timberman Lodge #54, F&AM. Later he became active with Shriner’s Kena Lodge & the Kena Clowns for ill children. He was also a member of Scottish Rites & the Blue Lodge. He belonged to local clubs such as VFW #6241, American Legion # 517 and Moose #1790, all of Mercersburg, and was a life member of NRA.
He was known for always having on his cowboy hat and boots. He had a diehard devotion to his Chevy trucks. He loved to hunt and also collect guns.
He and his wife, Thelma L. Bivens Howell, whom he married January 1981, both brought two children into the marriage from previous relationships Surviving children are Hartford S. and wife Susan Howell of Perry County; Mark and his wife, Nina, Howell of California; Robert Dean of Texas; and Debora Mose of Mercersburg; grandchildren: JoAnn Epperson of Mercersburg, who was the light of his life, and Stanley and wife Michelle Howell, and several other grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren to whom he was a father figure and whom he treasured and adored: Hailee, Austin and Autumn Epperson; and two other great-grandchildren: Alaya and Areil Howell; seven sisters: Dorothy Peck of McConnellsburg; Marie Stevens and Alice Myers, both of Chambersburg; Peggy Wagner of Harrisonville; Bonnie Mills of Shippensburg; Wanda Boivja of Virginia; and Wilma Barner of Tennessee; one brother, Hartford Howell Jr. of Virginia; and his dearest and closet friend, Michael Bivens.
In addition to his father he was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Mose, and a brother, Ronald Howell.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, September 25, at Lininger- Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg. Pastor Vera Keith officiated. Burial was at Laurel Ridge Christian Church Cemetery, Big Cove Tannery.
