Rosella Souders Needmore, 95
Rosella “Curly” Sarah Mellott Souders, 95, Needmore, died Monday, September 16, 2013, at The Shook Home, Chambersburg, where she had been a resident since September of 2010.
She was born in Andover, Pa., on April 18, 1918, the daughter of the late William R. and Rose (DeShong) Mellott of Andover, Fulton County. She married Harry H. Souders on January 6, 1937. They lived in Needmore until May 1939 when they moved to a farm they purchased along Covalt Road in Thompson Township. They were dairy farmers there until 1966 when they moved to another farm along Gem Bridge Road. He passed away from a fall in the barn on November 22, 1974. She continued to milk 70 head of cows until the spring of 1978.
She graduated from Green Hill High School in 1936. During her years at Green Hill, she was an excellent basketball player and their team was champions. She was a member and very active in Antioch Christian Church where she had served as treasurer and secretary. She enjoyed attending the quarterly and annual church conferences. She was often preparing food for funerals and church conferences. She had served on the Thompson Township election board and the Southern States Women’s Committee. She was and avid gardener and worked her garden until she had a stroke in September of 2010. She did lots of canning, freezing fruits and vegetables and making jams and jellies. She enjoyed her flowers, square dancing when she was young and playing the card game 500. She also made many comforters and quilts of which some were embroidered squares of each state with the state bird or flower.
She is survived by a daughter, Doris Jean (wife of Harry) Bain of Needmore; sons: Harry Jack Souders (fi- ance Deb Seville) of Needmore; Henry William (husband of Carol) Souders of Needmore; grandchildren: Joyce Bain and husband Chris McConigal of Needmore; John ( husband of Sherry) Bain of Needmore; William ( husband of Rachael) Souders of Needmore; Cynthia Bain Cook (wife of Tom) of Gaithersburg, Md.; Jennifer Souders Smith (wife of Lee) of St. Thomas; Kimberly Mellott of McConnellsburg; greatgrandchildren: Amanda Bain McNamee (wife of Patrick) of Needmore; Samantha Bain of Johnstown; twins Brylie and Logan Smith of St. Thomas; Madison Akers of McConnellsburg; Destiney Leevy of McConnellsburg; a great-great-grandson, Zachary McNamee of Needmore; nieces: Marilyn Morton Strait, Betty Mellott Swope; nephews Wallace Mellott, Earl Martz, Bob Martz all of Harrisonville, and Bill Fogal of Chambersburg.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Grenville Mellott; sisters: Geneva Mellott, Thelma Morton, Beulah Martz and Faye Fogal; an infant brother, Harman; a 7- month- old sister, Nannie; and a foster brother, Grover “Tuck” Strait.
Services will be held at Antioch Christian Church, Big Cove Tannery, at 11 a.m., on Thursday, September 19, 2013, with Pastor Gerald Waltz and Pastor Roger Truax officiating.
Interment will be at Antioch Christian Church Cemetery, Big Cove Tannery.
There will be visitation Wednesday, September 18, 2013, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home Inc., McConnellsburg. There will also be visitation one hour before the service on Thursday at the church.
