Cowans Gap Activities

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming public programs:

Sunday, September 22: 3 p.m., CCC Walk – Join the park naturalist for a stroll around the park to visit some of the sites from when the Civil Conservation Corps had a camp here. Meet at the park office

5 p.m. – Tree ID by Seed. Meet at the interpretive center for an interactive program about how to identify trees by their seeds. Learn the subtle differences that help determine which seed belongs to which tree.

Monday, September 23: 1 p.m. – Overlook Hike. Meet the park naturalist at the park office for a hike to the top of the mountain. Enjoy the view from above of the campground and lake below. Be sure to bring a water bottle and wear sturdy shoes.

Thursday, September 26: 11 a.m. – See the Park Series. Three Mile Trail – Leave from the park office with the naturalist for a walk up the Three Mile Trail. This is a moderate to hard hike through the mountain laurel and blueberries. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring a water bottle.

Friday, September 27: 11 a.m. – Lakeside Tales. Bring preschoolers to the amphitheater (interpretive center if it is raining) for a story or two, a craft and an activity.

2 p.m – Digital Scavenger Hunt. Meet at the interpretive center to set out on an digital scavenger hunt. Grab camera or borrow one of ours and see if you can find everything on the list.

Saturday, September 28 – National Public Lands Day. 9 a.m. to noon – National Public Lands Day Volunteer Work Day – Join the 1,000s of people across the country that are out helping to take care of our public lands on this special day. Projects at the park may include trail maintenance, litter cleanup, painting, gardening, light construction and other projects. A great opportunity to get a group together or just come out yourself to help keep our park beautiful. Preregistration is required by contacting the park office at 717-485-3948. Lunch will be provided after the work day at noon.
