Cowans Gap Activities
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming public programs:
Thursday, August 29: 2 p.m. – Overlook Hike. Meet the park naturalist at the interpretive center to head out for a hike to the top of Cove Mountain. Enjoy the birdseye view of Cowans Gap and Cowans Lake. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring a water bottle.
Friday, August 30: 8:15 p.m. – Hop, Slither & Crawl. Stop by the interpretive center for an interactive program about the critters that hop, slither and crawl their way around the park.
Saturday, August 31: 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. – Beginners Kayak. Meet at the amphitheater to learn the basics of paddling around the lake in a kayak. You are welcome to borrow one of our boats, we even have a tandem kayak you can use! Kayak reservations must be made in advance by calling Renae Saum at 717-485-3948 or registering online at www.dcnr.state.pa.us. Participants must be at least 12 years of age, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
6:30 p.m. – Tree ID Walk. Join the park naturalist for a short program and stroll where you will learn how to identify the local trees and how to use dichotomous keys. This program will be held at the interpretive center
8:30 p.m. – Nature Magnified. See nature up close on the big screen at the amphitheater! Stop by to discover some of the hidden beauty found in the smaller things that live at the park.
Sunday, September 1: 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. – Skull Scatter. Stop by the table at the beach house to check your knowledge of the local wildlife. Can you tell who is who just by their skull?
5 p.m. – Cowans Gap History. Stop by the park amphitheater to learn about the history of the park. From the French and Indian War and a secret marriage, to the CCC and the many boys that helped build the structures you see around the park today. Also, the CCC flag has returned to the park! Be sure to stop by to see it!
Monday, September 2: noon to 1 p.m. – See the Park Series – One Mile Trail. Meet the park naturalist at the park office for a hike up the One Mile Trail. This walk through the blueberries and mountain laurel is slightly rugged, so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring a water bottle.
4 p.m. – Beginner Birding. Learn some of the tricks to identifying our feathered friends during this interactive program held at the park amphitheater.
6 p.m. – Leave No Trace Hiking. Join the naturalist at the amphitheater for a short stroll during which you will learn the basics of leave no trace ethics. Find out how you can leave the woods in the same condition, if not better, as when you got there.
