Cowans Gap Activities

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming public programs:.

Wednesday, August 14: 2 p.m., History Kayak. Join the park naturalist for a paddle around Cowans Lake while we discuss the history of the park. Hear how the area was used for its travel routes, how it played a role in the French and Indian War and how the lake came into existence during the Great Depression. Bring your own kayak or borrow one of ours, we even have a tandem kayak you can use! Kayak reservations must be made in advance by calling Renae Saum at 717-485-3948 or registering online at www.dcnr.state.pa.us. Participants must be at least 12 years of age, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the amphitheater.

Thursday, August 15: 1 p.m., See the Park Series. Three Mile Trail – Meet at the interpretive center to set out on a hike up the Three Mile Trail. Walk through the blueberries and mountain laurel on this trek that is not quite as long as the name suggests. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring a water bottle.

Friday, August 16: 3 p.m., Geocaching 101. Would you like to set out on a high-tech scavenger hunt? Join in at the amphitheater for this interactive program about geocaching, where we will each use GPS to search for hidden treasures. Bring your own GPS or we have a few that can be borrowed.

8:30 p.m, Night Hike: Join the park naturalist for a stroll as the sun disappears and night sets in. Learn about the special adaptations of creature of the night. Meet at the amphitheater.

Saturday, August 17: 9 a.m. to noon,Volunteer Day at the Park. Volunteers are needed to help maintain the beauty of Cowans Gap and insure that it is a safe and clean place to visit. If inter- ested in helping out, please register at the park office at 717-485-3948. This is a great project for large groups, service award hours or just a fun way to get the family together.

Sunday, August 18: 4 p.m., Whoodunnit Mystery. Something is amiss in Little Critterville! Become a detective and help us analyze the evidence, question the suspects and hear from the witnesses as we try to determine who is guilty. Meet at the amphitheater to be part of this interactive murder mystery!

5:30 p.m., Walk with Mrs. Cowan. Meet Mrs. Cowan at the amphitheater for a stroll around the lake while she tells her tale. A secret wedding, an Indian chief and a log cabin all contribute to the story of how Cowans Gap came to be named.
