Cowans Gap Activities
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming public programs:
Monday, August 5: 2 p.m. – Beginners Kayak. Would you like to try something new, exciting and relaxing? Sign up for this beginners course to learn the basics of paddling a kayak. Even those who already know how may learn a new trick or two! Bring your own kayak or borrow one of ours. We even have a tandem kayak. Kayak reservations must be made in advance by calling Renae Saum at 717-485-3948 or registering at www.dcnr.state.pa.us. Participants must be at least 12 years of age, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the amphitheater.
Thursday, August 6: 10 a.m. – One Mile Trail Hike. It may only be a mile, but there are many interesting things to be found along this trail. Join the park naturalist at the park office for a walk through this wooded area of the park. Be sure to bring water and wear sturdy shoes.
Friday, August 9: 8:30 p.m. – Owl Prowl. Meet at the interpretive center for a night hike in search of these nighttime predators. Learn some of the unique features that make them such versatile hunters of the forest after dark.
Saturday, August 10: 3: p.m. to 5 p.m. – Star charts at the nature center The Brightbill Interpretive Center will be open for you to explore the natural history of the area, and to see some of the local animals that call the park home. While you are there, make a star chart to use while watching the meteor shower that will be passing through this week.
5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. – National S’mores Day. Stop by the amphitheater fire ring to enjoy one of America’s favorite treats. S’mores are complimentary, however, donations are always appreciated.
8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. – Meteor Madness on the Beach. Join at the beach for a brief program about meteor showers, then lay back and enjoy the show in the night sky as you relax beneath the stars. Bring a blanket or chair. Beach must be vacated by 10 p.m.
Sunday, August 11: 2:30 p.m. – Tracks and Traces Walk. Join the park naturalist on a stroll around the park in search of evidence of the creatures who call the park home. Learn some of the tricks to finding where they call home. Meet at the interpretive center.
5 p.m. – Basic Survival Skills for Children. Join at the amphitheater to learn the basics of what to do and how to survive if you are lost in the woods. While designed for children, this interactive program is both educational and enjoyable for all ages.
