Buchanan Trail Sporters business partners Brad Wissinger and Sally Hoover will be greeting customers Friday and Saturday at the grand reopening of their business in the Penns Village Shopping Center. Since first setting up shop in the rear of M&M Electronics almost four years ago, Buchanan Trail Sporters LLC has established a solid reputation for offering good prices, good firearms and good customer service. Now with an expanded storefront, the firearms and sporting goods dealer has even more to offer local residents who regard hunting, fishing and the great outdoors as more than a hobby, but a way of life.

This Friday and Saturday, July 19 and 20, between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m., business partners Brad Wissinger and Sally Hoover will unveil their new and improved Buchanan Trail Sporters location. Light refreshments and prizes will be offered as part of their “grand reopening” in the Penn’s Village Shopping Center.

Wissinger said since the expansion project got under way in March, business has grown significantly. In fact, new signage put into place only last week on the storefront at 182 Buchanan Trail, Suite 175, McConnellsburg, has helped boost visibility as well as awareness about the store.

According to Hoover, a resident of Big Cove Tannery, the sign alone has drawn in a lot of customers who were not previously aware of the store’s existence. One of their more recent customers even included a man from Australia.

Hoover, who originally started out as Wissinger’s insurance agent, said she became involved in the business on a temporary basis to lend a helping hand, but loved the work so much she has become a full-time fixture at the store. Wissinger touts Hoover as being a godsend and one of the store’s many blessings.

“I love it,” said Hoover of her involvement with Buchanan Trail Sporters. “I didn’t know much about guns when I first came here, but I know a lot now.”

Wissinger, a native of Windber, Pa., who relocated to McConnellsburg area 14 years ago, noted his passion for the great outdoors and firearms began in the early 1980s when he apprenticed with a gunsmith in Osterburg. “That’s my true passion, although I don’t get to do much of that anymore,” he said.

His calling led him to establishing Buchanan Trail Sporters, which prior to the expansion project focused solely on guns, ammunition, accessories and reloading. With help from friends and the community, the shop has expanded its entire line and now includes fishing supplies, live bait and, hopefully in the near future, camping equipment. They also sell Pennsylvania hunting licenses as well as specialty items for women, such as handguns, stun guns and even pepper spray.

Wissinger noted even if something is not available on the shelf, items can be specially ordered for customers.

“The Lord has blessed us, greatly! Our first blessing was Sally. She’s phenomenal ... . She is knowledgeable and can sell anything in this store,” said Wissinger. “Our second blessing has been the support from the community. We couldn’t have asked for better help in getting ready for our grand reopening. We’re very grateful. The help we’ve received speaks highly of this town and the county itself.”

Buchanan Trail Sporters LLC is open Mondays from noon to 5:30 p.m.; Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays, noon to 7 p.m.; and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The store can also be opened by special appointment.
