Marian Lynch Andersen, 93, Virginia Beach, Va., died Thursday, July 4, 2013.
She was born and raised in McConnellsburg, Pa., and was the daughter of Thurman Guy and Mary Stenger Lynch. She was the widow of Walter Andersen, who predeceased her after a loving marriage of 61 years, and her daughter, Marianne K. Andersen, also precedes her in death.
Survivors include two sons: Walter Lynch Andersen of Virginia Beach, Va., and John David Andersen and wife Teresa Dale Andersen; and one granddaughter, Jessica Brooke Andersen, all of Huntersville, N.C.
She received her Bachelor of Business Education degree from Indiana State Teachers College in Indiana, Pa., and her master’s degree in business education at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.
Her career started at Shanksville High School in Shanksville, Pa., as a business education teacher. She then met her husband to be, Walter Andersen, in New Orleans, La., when he graduated as a 2nd lieutenant from the Army Officers’ Candidate School. They married soon after, and then he was sent to serve 2 ½ years in the Transportation Corps in the European Theatre during World War II. When he returned from the war, they lived in New York City, Baltimore, Md., and then moved to Norfolk, Va., in 1950.
She resumed her career in Norfolk, at Novice High School and later became chairperson of the business education department. When Lake Taylor High School opened in Norfolk in 1976, she transferred and served as department chairperson until she retired in 1987.
She was a member of Beta Gamma Chapter of Delta Pi Epsilon, and a National Honorary Graduate Society in Business Education. She was also a charter member of Omicron Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an International Honorary Society for Woman Educators, for which she served in various offices and on committees at the chapter and state levels.
She has been a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church since 1964, having transferred from First Lutheran Church in Norfolk, Va.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at 2 p.m., at the Rosewood- Kellys Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, Va. Burial was at Rosewood Memorial Park.
