Cowans Gap Activities
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming public programs at Cowans Gap State Park:
Friday, July 19: 8:30 p.m., Bat Count – A short program about bats in Pennsylvania will be held at the amphitheater, then stay to help count the summer resident bats of Cowans Gap. The pups should all be flying by now. This is part of ongoing research at this site and across the state to gauge overall health of our region’s bat population. Kids are welcome to count, but we need reliable adults to count for official tally. Instruction will be provided on the best way to count bats, and no experience is necessary. Bring a blanket or camp chair.
Saturday, July 20, 9 a.m. to noon – Volunteer Day at the park. Volunteers are needed to help maintain the beauty of Cowans Gap and insure that it is a safe and clean place to visit. If interested in helping out, please register at the park office at 717-485- 3948. This month we are hoping to get all the new picnic tables assembled – that means we need a lot of help.! It is a great project for large groups, service award hours, or just a fun way to get the family together.
1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Stream Stomp. After a morning of volunteering or just enjoying the park, why not cool off in the Aughwick Creek? Look for the macroinvertebrates that can tell so much about how healthy the stream is. Meet the park naturalist at the Plessinger Trail head.
Sunday, July 21, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Nature center open. Stop by the Brightbill Interpretive Center to explore some of the local history and discover some of the wildlife.
4 p. m. to 5: 30 p. m., Damsels and Dragons Kayak – Join the park naturalist for a paddle around the lake while searching for dragonflies and damselflies on the hunt! Bring kayak or borrow one of ours, even have a tandem kayak you can use! Kayak reservations must be made in advance by calling Renae Saum at 717-485-3948 or registering online at www.dcnr.state.pa.us. Participants myst be at least 12 years of age, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the amphitheater.
6 p.m. to 7 p.m, Top of the Mountain Hike. Meet at the nature center to head out on a hike to the top of Cove Mountain. View the park from above and the valleys beyond. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring a water bottle.
