Sea Turtle Center Tries To Reduce Terrapin Deaths
JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. (AP) – The Georgia Sea Turtle Center hopes to make the summer nesting season less deadly for diamondback terrapins on the Georgia coast.
The center on Jekyll Island plans a presentation Saturday to make sure residents and visitors know about the hazards the small turtles face from cars on the island causeway. Officials say dozens of nesting female terrapins get hit by cars each year on the roadway linking Jekyll Island to the mainland. Most of them don’t survive.
During the session at the island’s Great Dunes Pavilion, staff from the Sea Turtle Center will demonstrate how to identify a terrapin on the roadway and what to do if they spot one.
