Locals Participate In

District Championships

McConnellsburg and Southern Fulton will be represented at the PIAA championships after having garnered top honors last Wednesday at the District 5 track and field championships held in Loysburg.

Competing strong throughout the season in the hurdles, McConnellsburg’s Corey Hill was the lone competitor from Fulton County to bring home a pair of gold medals during the district championships. Hill won the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.93 as well as the 300 hurdles in 42.70.

Joining Hill at the state championships will be Southern Fulton’s Tyler Richards, who placed first in the 1600 meter with an overall time of 4:37.65. Jacob Ashkettle and Dylan Cross also took home first-place wins in the 400 meter and pole vault and will advance to state competition.

At Districts

Athletes from McConnellsburg and Southern Fulton high schools squared off at the District 5 track and field championships held in Loysburg last Wednesday with two of those students advancing to the state championships.

Lady Spartan Nikki Fleming took the high jump event with a clearance of five feet two inches. Fleming will be joined at states by Macey Hollenshead of Southern Fulton, who placed second in the 1600 meter behind first-place runner Maria Snyder from Northern Bedford. Snyder has opted of out state championships in the 1600 meter in order to concentrate on competing in the 3200 meter.

Forbes Road 3

The Forbes Road Cardinals closed out their season with a 7-13 record Saturday, falling to the Everett Warriors by the score of 9-3. Pitcher Brock Broadwater lasted three innings during the Sideling Hill League game with four strikeouts, five walks, five hits and four earned runs. Broadwater, along with teammate Kyle Schoen, tallied two hits. Hunter Horton batted threefor four.

Chestnut Ridge 3

McConnellsburg won its sixth-straight game Thursday night, closing out its regular season play with a record of 15-5. J.T. Barnard, Spartan winning pitcher against Chestnut Ridge, recorded two strikeouts, five walks, six hits and three earned runs during the 15-3 Sideling Hill League win. Dylan Everts homered for Mc- Connellsburg, who also got a double from Jesse Swope. Swope closed out the day batting three-for-three, and Tristin Deneen was two-forfour.

Forbes Road 1

Forbes Road’s Casey Wade saw his season record even out at 3-3 last Monday when the Cardinals dropped the opening game of a doubleheader to Chestnut Ridge. Wade lasted more than five innings on the mound with four strikeouts, three walks, 10 hits and three earned runs. Matt Bricker went threefor three during the game and also added an RBI. Alec DeShong had the team’s other hit, a single.

Forbes Road 0

Chestnut Ridge and Forbes Road went seven innings last Monday night in the second game of a double header that ended in a 10-0 Sideling Hill League win for the Lions. Losing pitcher Brock Broadwater finished out the day with one strikeout, eight walks, seven hits and five earned runs. Kyle Schoen batted two-for-two.

McConnellsburg opened up a doubleheader last Wednesday by eliminating any hope for Hyndman with a crushing 15-1 victory. Winning pitcher Jesse Swope finished out five innings with three strikeouts, one walk, three hits and one earned run. Teammate Taylor Souders went two-for-three with five RBIs. Tristan Deneen also had two hits and three runs batted in.

Momentum from a win earlier that night propelled McConnellsburg forward as the Spartans clinched the second game of last Wednesday’s doubleheader over Hyndman 18-8. Pitcher Taylor Souders lasted three innings with one walk, five hits and three earned runs. Jesse Swope batted three-for-four, which included two doubles. Dalton Garlock finished out the night with three hits, three RBIs and four runs.

Fannett-Metal 3

Forbes Road ended a four-game losing streak last Wednesday slipping by the Fannett-Metal Tigers by the final score of 5-3. Winning pitcher Tristan Gelvin had a big day on the mound for the Cardinals, recording 13 strikeouts, one walk, five hits and two earned runs. Gelvin also led the team’s offensive effort with two hits and two RBIs. Kyle Schoen also had an RBI.

McConnellsburg won its second game of the season during its final game of the year against Forbes Road. Winning the Sideling Hill League match 7-5, Lady Spartan pitcher Chelsea Danner recorded her very first win of the year with four strikeouts, one walk, 10 hits and three earned runs. Cheyenne Meck tallied two hits and four RBIs, and Danner also had two hits, which included a double. Forbes Road pitcher Braylin Hohman totalled one strikeout, three walks, 10 hits and five earned runs. Corri Parsons and Haley Lashinsky both had doubles.

Chestnut Ridge only needed five innings Saturday to defeat McConnellsburg through the 10-run rule. McConnellsburg Lady Spartan pitcher Chelsea Danner had two strikeouts, two walks, seven hits and three earned runs.

Chestnut Ridge held the McConnellsburg Spartans to five hits during the Lions 8- 0 Sideling Hill League victory last Saturday. Pitcher Kylie Keefer was charged with the loss after totalling one strikeout, eight walks, 10 hits and seven earned runs in seven innings.

Pitchers Rachel Waite and Braylin Hohman combined for three innings Saturday when the Forbes Road Cardinals were ousted 16-0 by the Everett Warriors. Waite took the loss with two walks and two earned runs. Corri Parsons closed out the day with two hits.

Southern Fulton 0

Everett tallied 11 runs in the third inning last Monday and cruised on for an 18-0 trouncing of Southern Fulton. During the Sideling Hill League match, Lady Indian pitcher Marley Elbin recorded for seven strikeouts, four walks, 12 hits and 13 earned runs. Elbin also went on to have the only two hits at the plate for Southern Fulton.

Chestnut Ridge only needed four innings last Monday to finish off the Forbes Road Cardinals, who were missing their leading pitcher due to injury. Starting pitcher Braylin Hohman finished out the Sideling Hill League game with two strikeouts, five walks, 14 hits and 13 earned runs.

Chestnut Ridge easily picked up a win in the second game of a doubleheader last Monday, finishing off the Forbes Road Cardinals by the score of 26-1. Starting pitcher Rachel Waite took the loss for the Lady Cardinals in one inning with seven walks, four hits and eight earned runs. Hannah Purnell had the team’s only hit, a single, as well as an RBI.

Fannett-Metal’s leading pitcher Blaire Lauthers recorded her 50th career win last Wednesday when the Tigers downed Forbes Road 7-1. Sophomore Hannah Purnell led the Lady Cardinals at the plate, batting two-forthree with a double. Pitcher Braylin Hohman finished out the Sideling Hill League game with five strikeouts, three walks, seven hits and three earned runs.

Hyndman held the Mc- Connellsburg Lady Spartans to a mere one hit last Wednesday and moved forward for a 5- 0 non-league victory. Pitcher Chelsea Danner tallied one strikeout, three walks, seven hits and three earned runs.
