Shuster Challenger Declares Candidacy
On Armed Forces Day, local businessman and military veteran Art Halvorson of Manns Choice announced his candidacy for Pennsylvania’s 9th Congressional District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives at Jean Bonnet Tavern.
“With my leadership experience, I believe my candidacy presents a clear choice to the people of the 9th District,” said Halvorson. “Our founders ... understood that principled leadership is needed to govern our land,” he added. Halvorson promised, “If elected, I will limit myself to three consecutive terms. I will stand firmly for fiscal responsibility, limited government and the free enterprise system.” Halvorson also commented, “We need leadership in Congress that will eliminate the status quo, give power back to the people, which is where our founders squarely placed it. That power is exercised at the primary and general election ballot box ... and it is heard in the voices who hold leaders accountable.”
Halvorson led the largest transformation of the Coast Guard in more than 100 years. He was a pivotal leader in transferring the Coast Guard form the Department of Transportation after 9/11. He also directed the consolidation of U.S. port operations around the nation, making the service more efficient and saving taxpayer dollars. Having had a distinguished military career, Halvorson retired form the Coast Guard in 2006 as a captain. He currently owns four companies that manage commercial real estate properties around the country.
A graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Halverson served as a Coast Guard helicopter pilot before retiring to Manns Choice in 2007. He has a bachelor’s degree in economics and management from the Coast Guard Academy, an MBA from the College of William and Mary and a Masters of Science in strategic studies from the U.S. Air War College. Halvorson brings to the race not only lifelong conservative values, but proven leadership abilities, strong managerial and entrepreneurial experience and exceptional operational skills.
Halvorson is a member of Gideon’s International, the National Rifle Association, Crossroads Community Church in Bedford, and the Officers’ Christian Fellowship of which he previously served as national president. Art and his wife of 34 years, Paula, have six children and six grandchildren.
Pennsylvania’s 9th District includes portions of Blair, Fayette, Greene, Washington, Westmoreland, Somerset, Indiana, Franklin, Fulton, Bedford and Huntingdon counties.
