Legion Auxiliary Presents Awards
The winning essays from the Americanism essay contest were read. “What Freedom Do I Enjoy Most” was the title. The contest was open to all students in grades 3- 12 in Fulton County.
Class I division (grades 3 and 4) winning essay was from Kalyn Fox. He is a third grader from Southern Fulton Elementary School and the son of Wendy and Kenny Fox of Warfordsburg. Class II division (grades 5 and 6) winner was Joshua Stocker. He is a fifth grader from Southern Fulton and is the son of Karen and Timothy Stocker of Warfordsburg. Honorable mention for that division went to Skye Ritz, a fifth grader at Southern Fulton and daughter of Wendy and Todd Ritz of Warfordsburg.
The winner from Class III (grades 7 and 8) was Bethany Beddow. She is a seventh grader from Fulton County Community Christian School and the daughter of Ramona and Kirk Beddow of Berkeley Springs. Class IV division (grades 9 and 10) was won by Patrick Keefer, a ninth grader from McConnellsburg High School and son of Bonnie and Randy Keefer of McConnellsburg. There were no entries from grades 11 and 12. Each of th students received a monetary award and were encouraged to enter the contest next yer.
The next awards presented were the eighthgrade Girls Merit Award. This award is based on Americanism, honor, scholarship, service, leadership and courage. It was given to one eighth-grade girl from each school in Fulton County. Bronwyne Mellott received the award from McConnellsburg
High School. She is the daughter of Karla and Howard Mellott. Morgan Daniels received the award from Fulton County Community Christian School. She is the daughter of Danelle and Scott Daniels. Kristina Parsons received the award from Forbes Road High School. She is the daughter of Sharon and Troy Parsons. Tiara Bard received the award from Southern Fulton High School and is the daughter of Lori and Dwight Bard.
Poppies were given to each of the 44 guests. The veterans present were thanked for their service to the country. A Memorial Day reminder was given to go out and show support. Anyone wishing to donate flowers to decorate the veterans graves on Memorial Day, May 26, please contact Sandy Munson at 717-485-4766 no later than Friday, May 24, to arrange to have the flowers picked up.
Refreshments were served. Everyone was thanked for coming out to support the youths.
A short meeting followed. Donations were made to Wounded Warriors, Wounded Warriors Kids Scholarships, Children of Warriors, Fulton County Honor Guard, Fulton County Library, American Legion Golf Tournament and Hollidaysburg Veterans Home for bingo with the residents.
The next meeting will be June 12 at 6 p.m., at the American Legion.
