Cowans Gap Activities
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming public programs:
Friday, May 24: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Stream Stomp – Would you like to know who lives in the stream and what they can tell us about how healthy Aughwick Creek is? Join the naturalist at the bridge by Plessinger Trail to find out what is living under the rocks and in the current. Be sure to wear water shoes or old sneakers for in the stream!
7 p.m.: Insect Theater – The Interpretive Center is being invaded by giant water bugs! Stop by to see them up-close and find out a few of their secrets to surviving in the lake and stream.
Saturday, May 25: 2:30 p.m. – Dragons & Damsels Kayak. Set out from the amphitheater for a float around the lake to discover the many different beauties that rely on the lake to survive. A few single-person kayaks and one tandem will be available to borrow but must be reserved in advance by calling Renae Saum at 717-485-9018 or by registering online at the DCNR calendar of events page. If bringing own kayak, please still signup in advance and let us know you are equipped. Participants must be at least 12 years old, and anyone under 18 years old has to be accompanied by an adult. Life jackets are required for this program.
8 p.m. Bat Count! It’s that time of year again! Here at the park we monitor how many of these little flying mammals we have and you can be part of the research! Meet at the amphitheater for a brief discussion on the history of bats at Cowans Gap and why we are keeping track of them, before we head out to the boxes to count them.
Sunday, May 26: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. See the Park Series – Every Sunday this spring we will set out from the nature center to explore a different trail in the park. This week we will be heading down the Three Mile Trail, a mountainside walk through our state flower, the mountain laurel, which should be in bloom! Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring a water bottle.
4:30 p.m.: Leave No Trace Hiking – Join the naturalist at the amphitheater for an interactive program and short hike where we will learn the simple principles of LNT.
