CHAPTER REPORTER

Forbes Road FFA Chapter recently had the opportunity to celebrate National FFA Week, February 16-23. This year’s theme for the FFA is “I Believe We Can.” This signifies exactly what the local chapter strives to instill in its members.

Aside from events such as snow tubing, conferences, field trips, etc., the chapter decided to take on a service-learning project this spring. As a chapter effort coupled with a senior project for former chapter vice president Alexis Clippinger, Forbes Road FFA decided to exhibit its support for agriculture by raising money in support of Heifer International, a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to relieving global hunger and poverty.

Started by an American farmer, it provides gifts of livestock and plants, as well as education in sustainable agriculture, to financially disadvantaged families around the entire world.

Through donations of FFA members, faculty and area businesses, the chapter was able to collect enough donations to purchase pigs, a hive of bees, and a flock of hope. The flock of hope is a collection of chickens, ducks and geese. Over time as these animals grow and produce young, families are provided with valuable food and can also sell the surplus eggs, honey and offspring at market. The extra income can be used to send children to school, build secure housing and more.
