Cowans Gap Activities
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming public programs:
Saturday, May 11: 9 a.m. to noon – Adopt-A-Trail Workshop. This workshop is offered to Adopt-A-Trail members only. A few great trails are still available for adoption by a family, group or individual. Anyone interested in adopting a trail at Cowans Gap, contact the park office for more information. Preregistration is required for this program.
2 p.m.: Airborne Fishermen – Cowans Gap has many anglers that show up every day. Meet at the nature center to learn about resident fishermen, which include ospreys, bald eagles and kingfishers.
Sunday, May 12: – 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nature Center Open!
2 p.m. to 3 p.m. – See the Park Series. Every Sunday set out from the nature center to explore a different trail in the park. Bring Mom for a leisurely walk around the Lakeside Trail. This trail is ADA accessible and 1.4 miles in length. See what wildflowers are blooming and perhaps see a few of nature’s mothers that live around the lake.
4 p.m. Nature’s Mommas – In honor of Mothers Day, look at who the moms in the woods are. Learn a bit about how they compare to human mothers in their love and care for their children. This program will be held at the amphitheater. In case of rain, it will be held inside the nature center.
Saturday, May 18: 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteer Work Day. Would you like to help keep Cowans Gap State Park in tip-top shape? Every third Saturday of the month are park work days. Possible projects may include fence repair, pavilion maintenance, debris and litter cleanup, trail work and other projects. A great opportunity for families and groups to get together or for individuals to come out and meet other people who enjoy the park. Join the growing group of people who can return to the park and proudly say “I did that!” Please register with the park office at 717-485- 3948.
1:30 p.m.: James Buchanan History – Have you been to Buchanan’s Birthplace State Park? Would you like to know more about the only president of the United States born in Pa.? Meet the naturalist near the memorial at the park to find out about his life in Franklin County on the frontier, his time as president and his role in the start of the Civil War.
Sunday, May 19, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nature Center Open; 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. See The Park Series. Every Sunday set out from the nature center to explore a different trail in the park. This week hike up to the overlook that gives a birds-eye view of the park. This hike is about a mile up to the overlook and is moderately steep. Please wear appropriate footwear and bring a water bottle.
4 p.m.: Kayak Scavenger Hunt! Set out from the nature center on a hunt around Cowans Lake. See if you can find everything on the list to earn a prize. A few singleperson kayaks and one tandem will be available to borrow but must be reserved in advance by calling Renae Saum at 717-485-9018 or by registering on-line at the DCNR Calendar of Events page. Anyone bringing your own kayak, please still signup in advance and let us know you are equipped. Participants must be at least 12 years old, and anyone under 18 years old has to be accompanied by an adult. Life jackets are required for this program.
