Stolen Hand Bells Returned To Central Pa. Church
YORK, Pa. (AP) – A set of bronze hand bells stolen from a church in York months ago has been returned.
The York Dispatch reports the Rev. Jason Schwartzman says he had kept faith and wasn’t entirely surprised when all nine missing bells were returned in time for the Otterbein United Methodist Church’s Easter service.
Police say the theft was reported March 15, but may have occurred as long ago as November. The missing bells were valued at $2,600.
Investigators say five of the bells ended up in a Yorkarea musical instrument shop, where the owner listed them for sale on eBay. The sale was canceled when it was discovered the bells had been stolen.
The other bells were seized in December by police in York County as part of a different investigation.
