Pittsburgh Zoo Giving Wild Dogs To Zoos
PITTSBURGH (AP) – The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is closing its African painted dogs exhibit and is in the process of moving the 10 wild canines kept there to other zoos in the wake of the mauling death of a 2-year-old boy who fell into the exhibit last fall.
Zoo president Dr. Barbara Baker says the zoo community and the community at large “need time to heal” from the death of little Maddox Derkosh, who was killed Nov. 4 when he fell from the railing of an observation platform overlooking the exhibit.
Baker won't say where the wild dogs are going, but said four have been sent to other zoos, two others will be shipped out soon, and four others will leave in the fall. All of the zoos accepting the endangered dogs already have others on exhibit.
