The 2013 dirt track racing season is officially under way as the All-Star Circuit of Champions Sprints and the World of Outlaw Late Models kicked off the year over the weekend down south.
Donny Schatz made a clean sweep of the two All- Star events at Florida’s Bubba Raceway Park, winning both Friday and Saturday night in his Tony Stewart Racing-owned sprinter.
Friday night, Schatz defeated Daryn Pittman, Hanover’s Logan Schuchart, Dale Blaney and David Gravel, with Lance Dewease finishing ninth in his first night in the Heffner Racing No. 27.
Schatz came back to dominate again on Saturday night, taking the win over Tim Shaffer, Tony Stewart, Blaney and Pittman, with Dewease 10th.
The Sprint cars now head to Volusia Raceway Park for two more All-Star events this week along with three nights of World of Outlaw action.
The WoO Late Models were at the Screven Motor Speedway in Georgia, where Shane Clanton and Josh Richards dominated both nights.
Clanton opened the season with a Friday night win over Richards, Scott James, Gregg Satterlee and Casey Roberts while Richards turned the tables on Saturday night, scoring his 40th career WoO win over Clanton, Mike Marlar, Dale Mc- Dowell and Eric Wells. Richards has returned to the WoO tour after two relatively unsuccessful attempts on the NASCAR tour.
Barring any big storms headed down the pipeline, local racing is just over a week away as all systems are go for the February 23 opener at Lincoln Speedway for the 410 Sprints.
