Mary A. Smith St. Thomas, 86

Mrs. Mary Alice (Beckner) Smith, 86, St. Thomas, died Monday, January 14, 2013, in Chambersburg Hospital.

Born January 21, 1926, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late David C. and Laura E. ( Kline) Beckner. She spent her early life in Waynesboro, moving to Chambersburg in 1968.

She was a graduate of Waynesboro high School with the Class of 1943.

She and her husband of more than 69 years, Ralph Lee Smith, were married July 17, 1943, in Hagerstown.

During World War II, she was employed at Frick Co., Waynesboro. She later worked as a clerk at ACME in Chambersburg and occasionally at other area stores until her retirement in 1982. Following her retirement, she was employed at Frey’s Dairy, Chambersburg, for several years.

She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Waynesboro, where she was active with the United Methodist women and was a member of Cheerful Givers Sunday school class. She also was a member of AARP.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by eight children: Joan L. Gress, Shippensburg; Alicia M. Stitely of Waynesboro; Carol L. May ( Jerry) of Chambersburg; Lorna J. Geesaman ( Dale), Mc- Connellsburg; Carla S. Kent (Steve) of Bozeman, Mont.; Vicki L. Lemmon (Gary) of St. Thomas; Rosemary L. Smith (Philip) of Fayetteville; and Ralph L. Smith II, Chambersburg; 37 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three grandchildren: Victoria Smith, Christine Gees- aman and Stephen Stitely; one sister, Esther Jones; and four brothers: Joseph, George, Earl and Glenn Beckner.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m., Friday, January 18, in Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro, was in charge of arrangements.
