Racing Roundup

By Brad Vores

Another holiday season has passed and now the countdown begins for the 2013 racing season.

Of course, the World of Outlaws Late Models and Sprints as well as the All-Star Sprints kick off their seasons in early February down South but we must wait a few weeks later here in the Northeast.

Lincoln Speedway has the earliest season opener with its Icebreaker for 410 Sprints slated for February 23, and the track will then run through October with a schedule comprised with 35 racing events, 30 of them featuring 410 Sprints. The World of Outlaws and All Stars both return to Lincoln in 2013.

Hagerstown Speedway released its 2013 schedule last week with 26 events slated, some of them two-day programs. One of the most noticeable changes to the new year will be the annual Octoberfest, which was changed to the Brawl in the Fall last year, is no longer on the schedule to end the season. The Brawl in the Fall that was rained out in 2012 will be the first event on the new schedule slated for Sunday March 17.

Hagerstown has numerous Three State Flyers Late Model shows again in 2013 along with a Late Model Speedweek date, the Lucas Oil Late Model Series, Steel Block Bandits, a 410 PA Speedweek date and numerous other specials.

Williams Grove Speedway has its opening night set for Friday, March 22, featuring 410 and 358 Sprint cars. The Grove’s schedule is similar to past years with nearly 40 shows on the slate. One big change will be the muchneeded and welcomed removal of the Triple 20s for 410 Sprints. That race, in honor of Jack Gunn, will now just be a single-feature event.

The World of Outlaws have six dates at the Grove once again, while the All- Stars will be in action twice. Williams Grove also has two PA Speedweek shows, which will kick off one night earlier this season than past years. The 358 Sprints have 16 dates at the Grove, while the Late Models, 305 Sprints and ARDC Midgets are also on the schedule.

The Grove also returns with its Saturday Night Series featuring the Sportsman, 358 Late Models and Street Stocks. There will be close to 20 SNS events in 2013.

Selinsgrove Speedway is slated to open on March 10 with a 410 Sprint car program followed by a weekend of modified racing before going to its regular Saturday night program on March 23. One big event this season at the track will be a two-day World of Outlaw Late Model show over the Labor Day weekend. Selinsgrove has not released its schedule yet.

Port Royal Speedway has also not released a 2013 schedule.

The annual PA Speedweek series kicks off at Williams Grove on June 28 followed by Lincoln on June 29, Big Diamond on June 30, Grandview on July 2, Hagerstown July 3, Lincoln July 4, Williams Grove July 5, Port Royal July 6 and Selinsgrove July 7. The Thursday July 4 show at Lincoln will be the $7,000-to-win Kevin Gobrecht Memorial and the Friday July 5 Williams Grove show will be the $10,000-towin Mitch Smith Memorial. All other races pay $5,000 to win.

That’s a wrap for the first week of the new year. Any race teams wishing to get information in the column before the season begins, please e-mail Bvores@comcast.net.
