County Band Concert January 12 At Academy
Mercersburg Academy will host the annual Franklin- Fulton County Music Educators Association County Band Concert Saturday, January 12, at 1:30 p.m. in the Burgin Center for the Arts Simon Theatre on campus. Though admission is free, seating is open to the public on an extremely limited basis.
The event features approximately 220 students representing grades 7-12 from 15 area schools in the two counties. The junior-high band includes students from grades 7-9, while the seniorhigh ensemble encompasses those in grades 10-12.
Dr. Bradley Genevro and Dr. John W. “Buzz” Jones are this year’s guest conductors. Genevro, the director of bands and associate professor of music at Messiah College in Mechanicsburg, and Jones, a professor of music at Gettysburg College, will conduct the junior-high and senior high bands, respectively.
Richard Rotz, the academy’s director of music and director of the school’s concert band, and Jack Hawbaker, a member of the fine-arts department faculty and director of the jazz band, are the host directors for the event.
Mercersburg Academy last hosted the event in 2007.
In addition to the Academy, students from the following schools are scheduled to participate: Chambersburg Area Senior High School, Chambersburg Area Middle School North, Chambersburg Area Middle School South, Corpus Christi School, Forbes Road Junior- Senior High School, Greencastle Antrim Senior High School, Greencastle-Antrim Middle School, James Buchanan Senior High School, James Buchanan Middle School, McConnellsburg Middle-High School, Shalom Christian Academy, Southern Fulton Junior-Senior High School, Waynesboro Area High School, and Waynesboro Area Middle School.
