H. Lyle Duffey Big Cove Tannery, 90
He was the son of the late Herbert A. Duffey and Mary Jane Johnston Duffey. Born in Chambersburg, Pa., on October 27, 1922, he was a life-long resident of Fulton County.
He was a graduate of Mc- Connellsburg High School and Shippensburg University.
After service in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he taught in high schools in the county. In 1953 he joined the staff of The First National Bank of McConnellsburg, where he served as an executive officer for over 30 years. He was a member of the board of directors of the bank for 45 years. He was also a member of the board of directors of JLG Industries for 23 years.
During his banking career he had the privilege of serving a term as a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, a term as vice president of the American Bankers Association, and as a director of Pennsylvania Community Bankers Association where he was named to the organization’s Hall of Fame following retirement.
He was a member of Mc- Connellsburg United Presbyterian Church for most of his life.
After retiring from the bank, he responded to a call to the ministry. He enrolled in the Wesley Theological Seminary course of study and served as pastor of the Lemasters United Methodist Church for eight years. He was a member of the Mc- Connellsburg United Methodist Church at the time of his death.
Locally he was active in his community, being involved in numerous civic organizations. For his service to the community he was recognized by Fulton County Chamber of Commerce with both a Man of the Year award and an Outstanding Citizen award. He was also active in veterans organizations, serving as American Legion commander on several occasions. In addition he was a member of the Mt. Zion Lodge #774 F&AM.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Alloway Duffey, mother of his four sons. Their oldest son, Richard Lyle Duffey (husband of Helen), and a second wife, Marie Evans Duffey, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Bivens Duffey at home; sons Thomas A. Duffey and John C. Duffey (husband of Bonnie) of McConnellsburg, and son James T. Duffey (husband of Crystal) of Shippensburg; stepchildren: Tina M Evans of Cristfield, Md.; Lloyd Evans of Mc- Connellsburg; and Debra Bivens Peck (wife of Harold) of Big Cove Tannery; six grandchildren: Stacey Rineer (wife of Charles); Christina Duffey; Jennifer Meanix (wife of Colin); Cogan Duffey; Luke Duffey; and Sydney Duffey; a step- grandson, Michael Hinckle (husband of Jennifer); and a step-greatgrandson, Wyatt Hinckle.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, January 2, 2013, in McConnellsburg United Methodist Church. Pastor John Godissart officiated. Burial was private at Union Cemetery with the Fulton Honor Guard participating.
Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home Inc., McConnellsburg, was in charge of arrangements.
