FCMC Cardiologist Visits Senior Centers
Fulton County Medical Center cardiologist Jeffery Mandak visited all three area senior centers as part of an awareness campaign on the risk factors for heart disease and on the use of automated external defibrillators or AED’s.
An AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy that stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm.
Mandak showed the seniors, how the machine uses simple audio and visual commands to guide them to utilize the machine if ever needed. He explained how each member of the first-response team should have a job. For instance, one person should call 9-1-1 while another should get the AED and start running through the steps. He recommended training sessions to practice in case of a cardiac event.
He also explained how the seniors shouldn’t be afraid to use the machine as it walks them through how to use the machine and if the machine is needed at all. If a shock is advised, it will tell you to hit the button. The machine does all the work.
