Altoona Abduction Try Was Really Purse-snatching
ALTOONA, Pa. (AP) – Police say an incident they thought was an abduction attempt outside a central Pennsylvania junior high school was actually a failed purse-snatching.
That has prompted Altoona police to drop charges against a 23-yearold man who is a registered sex offender who police went from calling a suspect, to a “person of interest” to, finally, exonerating when it turned out he had a credible alibi.
The Associated Press is not naming the man because he was never arraigned on the charges in Tuesday morning's incident near Altoona Area Junior High School.
The Altoona Mirror reports Friday that police aren't saying how they mistakenly came to believe the man had accosted the girl – let alone tried to abduct her.
Nobody's been charged with the attempted pursesnatching.
